A Swedish Initiative for a GISANS instrument at the European Spallation Source ESS
The understanding of interfacial properties of materials, as well as interfacial processes in terms of structural, morphological and compositional changes, is of crucial importance in many scientific fields that include chemistry, physics, biology and engineering.
The European Spallation Source (ESS) has identified a dedicated surface scattering beamline as a high priority for the next phase of instruments. Therefore, a wide consortium, building on the strength in surface and interface science in Sweden, has formed to push for a Swedish-led project to design and construct such a Grazing-Incidence Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (GISANS) instrument at ESS.
ESS is pleased to invite the European scientific community to contribute input to a roadmap for instruments beyond the 15 currently under construction. This roadmap will guide future developments of the instrument suite, ensuring that ESS supports a versatile science portfolio in the decades to come. The call will be open for one year.
The SAGA project has been granted a prolongation by the Swedish Research Council.
We invite you to participate in a survey for the SAGA GISANS project. The SAGA (Surface Analysis using Grazing Angle neutron scattering) project will deliver a competitive instrument proposal for a dedicated grazing-incidence small-angle neutron scattering (GISANS) beamline, named SAGA , which may be constructed as part of the next suite of ESS instruments 16-22.
Goals of the SAGA project
-
Conceptual design
Develop the conceptual design of the world’s best GISANS instrument
-
Technical design
Develop a complete and robust technical design appropriate for an instrument proposal
-
Instrument project proposal
Submit a competitive instrument project proposal in next call for ESS instruments
-
Engage
Coordinate and engage the international and Swedish community to build a dedicated GISANS instrument at ESS
